We will work collaboratively to refine the current system for monitoring and improving air quality across the borough. This will include:
- reviewing the Council’s Walking, Wheeling and Cycling Strategy 2026-2035 to guarantee that it is fit for purpose
- campaigning to reduce idling
- pursuing all legal methods to restrict the use of diesel vehicles in the borough, which are the most polluting vehicles on our streets, whilst ensuring that the measures are fair to businesses
- exploring the impact of interventions like Low Traffic Neighbourhoods and the ULEZ to: a) check that they are successfully lowering air pollution; b) address any adverse effects on, for example, journey times and the cost of living
- protecting people from air pollution by planting hedges and trees near our roads where possible
- evaluating the programme of School Streets rolled out so far, extending existing ones where this would improve results, and introducing additional ones where traffic routes allow
- building upon schemes that encourage walking and cycling to and from school and workplaces
- discouraging the use of wood burning where it is not needed as a source of heat, as it emits high levels of pollution
