Accessibility

In accordance with the Social Model of Disability, which holds that people are disabled by societal barriers that exclude and discriminate against them, not by their impairment or health condition, we will work with residents to identify and address accessibility problems in Merton. We anticipate that this will include:

  • installing handrails, ramps, charging points for wheelchairs and mobility scooters, and Changing Places Toilets
  • moving or removing objects which impede access for wheelchair and mobility scooter users
  • introducing more resting spots, including benches and shelters
  • tackling illegal pavement parking
  • seeking to increase to at least 1.5 metres, but preferably 2 metres, the one-metre gap where pavement parking is allowed
  • working with local businesses who want to become more accessible

We will also ensure that the Council’s nascent Disability Forum is established fully, as per the Council’s Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Strategy.
