Merton Green Party is pleased to pledge that, if elected, we will prioritise the building of a safer and more comprehensive cycle network in Merton. This is a crucial element in Merton regeneration and in line with wider London strategy.
We have a vision of a fairer allocation of space in Merton’s streets. As we see in Paris, this can have a transformative effect on the way that we live, helping to revitalise entire areas. A good cycle network is essential to a fairer and happier Merton.
More specifically, we believe that improving infrastructure for those walking, wheeling and cycling will not only help people struggling with the cost of living, as these are affordable forms of travel, but also tackle congestion, road danger, and poor air quality, supporting better physical, mental and social health. Indeed, a network of walking, wheeling and cycling routes with danger reduction at their core will ensure that these environmentally sustainable alternatives to private car travel are accessible to as many residents as possible. For too long, Merton’s cycling routes in particular have been weighted towards their obstruction by parked private vehicles, and there remains a dearth of facilities that enable people to store their bicycles securely and for free or at a reasonable cost.
We are aware of the Council’s Walking, Wheeling and Cycling Strategy 2026-2035, and how various bodies, including Merton Cycling Campaign, Merton Active Travel, and Merton Centre for Independent Living, have fed into it. Should we experience electoral success in May, our Councillors will review it to ensure that it is fit for purpose. We know that attention to detail, and building effective relationships with those affected by proposed changes, are key.
