We believe strongly that people have more that unites them than that which separates them. We will use every mechanism available to promote equity, equality and inclusion, and to celebrate diversity and champion our common humanity.
This means challenging all forms of discrimination and exclusion, including ableism, ageism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, racism, xenophobia, ultranationalism, antisemitism, Islamophobia, and unreasonable terms and conditions for workers, such as unfair pay differentials.
We abhor the rise of divisive rhetoric and actions intended to intimidate minorities in Merton and beyond, and as detailed in our statement last October, are appalled by the Council’s failure to challenge the far right’s hijacking of the national flags to propagate hostility and discord. The swift removal of any object or graffiti that makes others feel threatened is crucial to reassuring and safeguarding not only those who live in the borough, but also those who work here, visit, or pass through.
We think that there is potential for more public events and council-led campaigns that actively engender community cohesion. One that highlights the Council’s status as a Borough of Sanctuary for refugees and asylum seekers, for example, would be both welcome and welcoming.
